Day 16. The arrival of Phet. We woke up 8 am on Friday to find stormy clouds, heavy rain and raging wind- just as promised. The local television showed horrible footage of a village in Sur being completely flooded over, luckily everyone was evacuated well in advance. We received over 450 mm of rain in 24 hrs- which in dry Muscat is a dangerous amount. Wadi floods are a high possibility, as well as mud slides and overflowing dams. And we had all of the above on Friday! Mom's sitting room leaked water from windows and doors towards the end of the day, and I was afraid to think of what was happening to our house! So the picture of day 16 is simple, as I spend the entire day in my pijams, drinking coffee, playing cards and watching DVDs:
Do not, on a rainy day, ask your child what he feels like doing, because I assure you that what he feels like doing, you won't feel like watching.
Day 17. As the cyclone quickly gets out (phew!!!) of Muscat, and continues on to Pakistan, the sun is shining and everyone is relieved. The brave venture out to discover the town center flooded, shops destroyed, roads washed away. 18th November street, a low lying area with horrible drainage systems is as always recovering from deep wounds caused by the storm. Some fences are ripped apart, 1 out of 2 lanes on the road is operating, trucks are pumping out water and dozens of cleaners are sweeping the streets. The entire reason we moved from our house is because I was worried about our car and motorbike, well guess the owner of this car was not concerned:
